The Honest Winter Skincare Guide For Dry, Sensitive, Break-Out Prone Skin
From moisturisers and spot treatments to masks and mindset, here’s what genuinely works for me...
As an acne-prone, dry, flaky, sensitive-skin girl, winter feels like a personal challenge. Breakouts show up weekly (sometimes daily, if we’re honest), and the ‘glass skin’ TikToks make me want to throw my phone across the room. This isn’t me preaching, I am by no means a professional. This is just me, sharing what actually works for my skin when winter decides to be extra.
Best Moisturisers for Acne-Prone & Flaky Skin This Winter
If you flake like pastry in a hot oven, moisturiser is non-negotiable. I stick to the basics: Arbonne Calm range (my early teen holy grail) and CeraVe for a budget-friendly, sensitive skin safe option. But before I moisturise (usually on no-makeup days) I start with Arbonne Clear Future Calming Lotion on my breakouts, which soothes redness and calms irritation.
My golden rule is drown your face lovingly.
Next, I target the dry zones with a serum: chin, nose, and any area that drinks products like breakfast. Never apply directly on active spots, unless you want a rebellion on your face.
My go-to serums:
Dior Capture Le Sérum: rich but breathable, my treat-yourself serum.
DermResults Glow Serum 10% Vitamin C: lightweight and leaves your skin super radiant.
The Spot Treatment That Actually Works for Hormonal Acne🌟
I’m always so cautious given that my skin is sensitive, but here is the one product that has earned its place in my winter, acne-prone skin rotation:
Rodial Breakout Drops - Found by my mum in Selfridges. Sceptical? Absolutely. Effective? Also absolutely. Shrinks spots without irritation; my university holy grail pre-prescription. It also did not dry out my skin at all!
And if things are still bad, the Boots Acne Treatment Service is surprisingly good: discreet, fast and professional. Perfect for winter panic mode!
What Face Masks Don’t Break Out Sensitive Skin?
Autumn and winter aren’t merely about hydration, they’re about slowing down. Even half an hour of me-time once a week can transform your skin (and your mood).
For years, I stuck to Garnier sheet masks. But this summer, I discovered Lush Coconut Shie Fresh Face Mask. Recommended by their PR team for my dry, reactive skin, it’s coconut yoghurt and vanilla in a creamy, soothing formula. My skin looked glowy without heaviness after one use; even my teenage brother now uses it (and he’s usually ‘wash with water, hope for the best’ type).
🥥Heads up: these masks are preservative-free and need refrigeration. Treat them like fresh juice: use quickly and keep chilled!
Pimple Patches That Actually Work
Pimple patches have gone full TikTok-chic; Starface made them trendy, colourful, and stigma-free. I wear:
· Clear ones for outings (discreet, subtle).
· Neon star ones at home because I love a pop of colour in the winter.
But my all-time favourites, the ones I swear by, are:
· Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Original; thick, pulls out all the gunk, sticks well, mostly invisible under makeup.
Winter Skincare Habits That Keep My Skin Calm☃️
Drink water!! Yes, I know, everyone says it. But when I was at university, I survived on iced coffee and often forgot water existed. My skin hated me. Now every-day, I make sure to have a cute water bottle on my desk, (currently a Starbucks gingerbread-print cup), and it actually reminds me to hydrate.
Eat what you want!! Winter is already dark and depressing. Extra chocolate? Go for it. I’m not here to enforce ‘no sugar, no fun’ rules. Treat your body, fuel your skin.
See a Doctor if needed. I tried everything high-end with no results. Benzoyl peroxide helped temporarily, even if it dried me out. Sometimes, you need guidance, and that’s okay!
In Short: This Is My Winter Routine
· Moisturise as though it’s your job.
· Simple, safe products.
· Spot-treat selectively.
· Mask weekly.
· Drink actual water.
· Eat what you like.
· Seek professional help if needed.
